As the St. Paul’s Schools celebrate the Ward’s Center silver anniversary, we take a look back at the history of creativity and talent. Twenty-five years since its first opening night, the idea of a joint facility completely shared by two distinct institutions is still unique among independent schools nationwide. And the realization of that shared vision is still enabling students to express themselves in deeply meaningful ways.

Arts

Art, in many forms, allows the creative expression that is essential to a St. Paul’s education. The visual and performing arts programs nurture beginners—even if they have never held a paintbrush or touched a musical instrument—and help the accomplished to increase their levels of sophistication, expertise, and achievement. It's not unusual for a St. Paul’s student who never thought of himself as an artist to find previously undiscovered talents, and with them, new ways to see the world.

At St. Paul’s, art means many things: drawing a landscape, directing a play, building a mahogany clock, perfecting a photograph, practicing a jazz saxophone solo, acting in a play, singing a major choral work, completing advanced academic coursework, and much more. Students work with accomplished teachers in drama, music, studio arts, woodworking, and dance.

Because the School recognizes the value of active engagement in a creative process, students must study art. St. Paul’s requirements arise from the conviction that the arts encourage personal expression, help develop self-discipline and new perspectives, and enrich lives.
