Commencement 2013
Posted 06/14/2013 09:00AM

In the hours preceding his eleventh and final Commencement as St. Paul’s Headmaster, Tom Reid had to make one last weather call. Renowned for his reluctance to bow to the elements when declaring snow days, Mr. Reid was similarly unbowed by Tropical Storm Andrea and decided during the early morning hours of June 8 that the storm’s remnants would not force Commencement indoors.

The School's Maintenance staff swung into action, moving all the chairs and staging from the Pollock Gymnasium onto the newly renovated Hamilton Lawn, and precisely at 10 a.m., the 89 members of the St. Paul’s Class of 2013 processed from the Chapel to their seats outside Brooklandwood. They now proceed from the School to 59 colleges and universities in 22 states and England. More than 60 percent of the graduating seniors reported accepting merit-based college scholarships. In the Commencement address, senior Cameron Smith demonstrated the speaking prowess that earned him a trip to the state final in the Poetry Out Loud declamation contest. He thanked the staff for their work in preparing the ceremony, thanked the seniors’ parents for their support, and most of all he thanked his classmates – more than half of them by name – for helping him become a man during his 10 years at St. Paul's.

Alex Nickol received the Kinsolving-Hamilton Award for embodying the ideals in the School Prayer. The Alumni Medal recognizing the student with the highest GPA in the class over four years of Upper School was awarded to Garon Lizana. Jake Carbone received the Arthur B. Kinsolving Fellowship Award for best representing St. Paul’s School.
