Letter to the St. Paul's Community from Trustee President F. Gillis Green '81

Feb. 17, 2012

Dear Members of the St. Paul’s School Community:

Tom and Ann Reid have decided it is the appropriate time to begin the next chapter of the professional life they share; accordingly, I regretfully inform you that Tom will conclude his tenure as Head of St. Paul’s School at the end of the 2012-2013 school year. It is difficult to imagine that the St. Paul’s School that exists today could have come to be without the 10 years of Tom’s leadership and vision.

Tom will enjoy a rich and distinguished legacy at St. Paul’s; innovation, vision, integrity and hard work will be just a few of the glowing adjectives used to describe his tenure. Tom has led St. Paul’s through significant educational and programmatic changes, never before experienced on our campus. Under Tom’s guidance, St. Paul’s has embraced the global aspects of education, specifically, the implementation of the International Baccalaureate program. He has assembled and developed an extraordinary faculty, staff, and leadership team who make the School better each day. Tom brought our largest campaign ever to a successful conclusion, helping reshape the campus landscape with Fisher Hall while growing the endowment to new heights. During the past several years, Tom has expertly managed St. Paul’s through demographic and economic challenges rarely experienced by local independent schools, placing St. Paul’s in a strong financial position for today, and launching a strategic planning process that will ensure our School’s continued success in the years ahead.

Both professionally and personally, Tom and Ann have lived out the St. Paul’s mission and served as role models for our students, leading by example with intelligence, reflection, hard work and decency. Tom embodies the ideal of the “St. Paul’s Gentleman;” Ann has forged relationships with a generation of students through her steady and supportive presence at seemingly every School event, from athletic contests to artistic performances and beyond. The Reids are blessed with the gift of readily connecting with children, of all ages, and our community is so much the better because of it. On behalf of the Board of Trustees, it has been an honor and privilege to work with Tom and Ann; St. Paul’s is very grateful indeed.

Tom's hard work has positioned St. Paul’s well for the future; as such, St. Paul’s will be one of the most attractive schools for candidates nationwide. We have had remarkable stability with just five Heads over the last 80 years, and are in the enviable position to define the next chapter in St. Paul’s history. The search for the next Head of St. Paul’s School will be led by a Search Committee chaired by Louis Sarkes, a current parent and Treasurer of the Board of Trustees. Louis is exceedingly bright, detail-oriented and acutely aware of what St. Paul’s requires of its leaders. Ultimately, the Board of Trustees as a whole will decide on the new Head of School, however, its decision will be supported by the advice and counsel of a Search Committee with active input from all parts of the community.

Tom will continue to lead St. Paul’s for the next 16 months and we are confident his diligence will not wane, and that the growth and success St. Paul’s has achieved during his tenure will be sustained.

Most Sincerely,

F. Gillis Green '81
